Year 5 Term 6

Key Concepts – Number – Calculations

  • Addition is commutative, subtraction isn’t.
  • We can use the inverse of each calculation to check our answers,
  • Place value and presentation is the key to success when adding and subtracting.
  • Children can select the appropriate operation from the vocabulary present in the question and explain their choices.
  • Multiplication is the same as repeated addition. Division is repeated subtraction.
  • Multiplication is commutative for any number of multiplicands.
  • Division is not commutative
  • When multiplying two positive whole numbers, the answer will always be larger than either of the starting numbers.

Key Concepts –Topic – Time and Area

  • Area is measured in units squared.
  • We find area multiplying the width by the length.
  • Children can use their knowledge of rectilinear shapes to find the area of compound shapes.
  • Children can estimate to check their answers.
  • It is important that children know that there are 52 weeks and 1 day in a normal year and 52 weeks and 2 days in a leap year.

Common Misconceptions – Calculations

Formal methods may not always be the most effective, efficient or appropriate to use.

Children will transpose the digits in a subtraction if the digit on top is larger than the digit on the bottom.

Place value is not adhered to, particularly with decimal calculations.

Common Misconception – Topic – Time and Area

Inaccurate multiplications cause incorrect answers.

Children do not find the area of both parts of a compound shape to add together to find the total area.

Children do not know the numbers of days in a particular month or a leap year.
