Key Concepts – Number, Ratio, Proportion, Algebra

  • Ratio shows the relationship between two values and can describe how one is related to another.
  • Ratio and proportion link to fractions and this needs to be explicitly stated and shown.
  • Ratio refers to the relationship between the quantities of two or more objects and it indicates the amount of one object contained in the other.
  • Proportion refers to the equality between two ratios.
  • Know how to find different percentages of a number.
  • Understand scale factor and how to scale shapes – relate this to ratio
  • Children begin to know that a number can be represented by a letter and that two letters the same, represent the same number while two different letters cannot represent the same number in an equation.
  • Children can work systematically to find all possible solutions to a problem.

Key Concepts –Topic- Measure: Volume and Time

  • Volume is the space occupied by a 3D shape
  • You calculate the volume of a shape by multiplying height × width × depth
  • Volume is measured in cubic measurements, e.g. cm³
  • You can count cubic units (1 cm³) to find the volume of 3D shapes –cubes and cuboids
  • Volume may be used in real life –swimming pools, oil tanks, boxes for packaging etc
  • There are 24 hours in the day
  • We can read time as both a 24 and 12 hour clock time
  • Am is morning, pm afternoon
  • That journey times can be calculated by finding differences in time outlined on timetables

Children confuse ratio and proportion

When scaling, children choose the wrong operation or don’t apply the same operation to all sides of the shape

Children do not work systematically when working through a problem and miss some possible solutions

 

Common Misconception – Measure: Volume and Time

Assuming the height or the width only of a container would impact its capacity or volume

Until given enough opportunity to estimate volume, estimates may be unrealistic

The 12pm is midnight and 12am is midday

Assuming that there are 100 minutes in an hour (leading to misconceptions when calculating time periods on timetables)
