Mathematics Curriculum Intent
At Whinless Down Academy Trust, the maths curriculum aims to ensure that every child develops a deep, secure and connected understanding of mathematics. Using a Teaching for Mastery approach and the White Rose curriculum, pupils learn through small, coherent steps that build strong number fluency, conceptual understanding and the ability to reason and solve problems with confidence.
Our curriculum is designed so that all pupils:
- Become fluent in number and methods through varied practice and secure mental strategies.
- Build conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency, enabling them to make connections and articulate their thinking using precise mathematical language.
- Apply their knowledge to solve problems, tackle unfamiliar contexts and develop resilience and independence.
- View themselves as capable mathematicians who enjoy the subject and approach challenge positively.
The curriculum is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, ensuring progression, coherence and long‑term retention. Teaching draws on concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, high‑quality modelling and consistent mathematical vocabulary. Regular formative assessment identifies gaps early so pupils keep up, while adaptive teaching provides support and challenge through depth rather than acceleration.
The White Rose scheme, supported by research‑informed guidance from the Kent and Medway Maths Hub, underpins long‑term planning and ensures that mastery principles are embedded across the school. Ongoing professional development and participation in Maths Hub work groups strengthen teacher expertise and secure consistency in pedagogy.
As a result, pupils develop strong fluency, deep understanding and confidence when reasoning and solving problems. They demonstrate positive attitudes towards mathematics and achieve well in assessments, showing that they are secure, reflective and independent learners who can succeed in mathematics both now and in the future.
